FAQs for Parents Taking Their Child to the Dentist for the First Time
When Should My Child See a Dentist for the First Time?
Ideally, your child should see us around their first birthday, or within 6 months after their first tooth erupts, which usually comes in around 6 months in the bottom front jaw.
What Happens at My Child’s First Dental Visit?
At your baby’s first dental appointment, we will gently examine your child’s teeth, gums, and mouth, looking for any abnormalities and ensuring that any emerging teeth are healthy. We may ask you to hold your child on your lap during this visit to make it a positive experience for your child. The first visit is usually short and designed to help your child get used to the idea of a dental checkup. We will also review proper at-home care of your child’s teeth and gums with you and answer any questions you may have.
How Can I Prepare My Child for Their First Dentist Appointment?
Talk about the appointment positively and mention that you enjoy your visits to your dentist. Explain, in clear, simple terms, what kids’ dental care in Spring Hill will look like and what to expect, so they are not frightened or worried when they arrive.
You will find lots of books about going to the dentist that you can read to your child. Answer their questions honestly and be willing to role-play as dentist and patient with them, letting them explore your own teeth and gums. Bring them to our office earlier than their appointment so they can get used to the setting and their surroundings. Our office staff will help make them feel at home.

How Often Should My Child Visit the Dentist?
To protect their oral health and allow us to monitor their dental development, we would like to see your child every six months. From ages 2 to 14, their teeth, gums, and jawbone are changing rapidly, sometimes triggering issues such as impacted teeth or misalignment. Seeing your child every six months allows us to spot and address minor dental issues before they become major problems.
What If My Child Has a Cavity or Dental Problem?
If you suspect a cavity or another problem, contact a children’s dentist in Spring Hill immediately. We can evaluate your child’s teeth, provide pain relief, and address the problem quickly so that the cavity does not worsen or spread to other teeth. If you are not sure when to take your child to a dentist, please feel free to call our office and ask. Our knowledgeable staff can advise you on the proper course of action, including how quickly they need to be seen.
How Can I Help My Child Maintain a Healthy Smile at Home?
Teach them proper brushing and flossing techniques and monitor their oral hygiene routine until you are sure they have the maturity and manual dexterity to properly brush and floss on their own (usually around age 7 to 9). It can help to brush and floss with them, or set a timer so they know to brush their teeth for a full 2 minutes.
Other ways to help your child maintain a healthy smile include:
- Never give your baby a bottle with anything but water before bed. Milk or juice will pool around their gums and teeth, leading to tooth decay.
- Before teeth emerge, wipe your baby’s gums with a soft cloth after feeding.
- Limit sweet snacks.
- Give children plenty of crunchy fruits and vegetables that will help clean their teeth and keep them strong.
- Restrict the amount of sodas and sweetened beverages your child is allowed to drink.
- Make sure your child has a dental checkup and professional teeth cleaning every six months.
- Consider getting dental sealants to protect molars.
- Ask us about fluoride treatments if your child does not get fluoride from your drinking water.
Does Dental Insurance Cover My Child’s Visit?
Most dental insurance covers routine dental checkups and cleanings twice a year for preventive care. Still, we encourage you to contact your insurance provider to confirm your coverage limits and any copays.
